question about keeping a colony...

xNeViNx Dec 14, 2005 03:28 PM

i just wanted to know if i could keep a colony of cresteds in a single tank. like lets say.....2.4 in a 55 gal tank. giving lots and lots of plants, and branches, and hiding spots, and just every possable thing to let the cresteds get away from eachother. but any way, iv heard once or twice that i could keep up to 2 males togeather, as long as theres more females then males so the males dont fight over them(duhhhhh lol). but i was just wandering if it were possable. or would i need like a 75-80 gal tank for that meny? thanks every one

I don't think a 55 gal would be big enough for 6 crested geckos. Keeping two males in the same tank can be problematic. If th ey do come into contact with eachother they will fight, often leading to the death of one or both from injuries. If th ere is alot of branches and leaves to break line of sight, two males may be alright together with that many females to go around. A larger tank probably would be better, this way each male can stake out a territory. Even then I still think there will be a risk of combat between the males. It would be better to split the group into two smaller colonies, one male to two females.

If you decide to give the larger tank a try with all 6 crested geckos, deffinitely have alot of hiding places, and several feeding dishes and water dishes, this way you can eliminate any fighting for food etc.

so im not going to try it. i herd that if you keep 2 cresteds togeather from hatchlings, and they both turn out to be males, they would be ok togeather. so im probably just going to keep a couple females togeather...just for looks. i dont even want a cage really for breeding. i bred them befor. i just dont feel like breeding them again. so ill just keep like 4 or 5 females togeather. do you think that would be ok? i kno for 1.3 it should be like 30 gal enclosure.
thanks

females should be fine together, but always watch for any aggression. Like any animal, disputes could happen. But if no fighting or injuries are noticed each night, then they should be fine together. Again, plenty of space and visual barriers will make it easier for a group of females to live in harmony. Also having several feeding stations around the cage will help in preventing one or two females hogging all the food from the others.

I am deffinitely no expert on crested geckos but I do read a fair bit on them. You can deffinitely make a nice vivarium style display cage, with living plants and bio-active soil on the bottom. This way there is always something to see in teh cage, even when the crested geckos are gone to bed for the day.

Not long ago I finally got an extra large exoterra for 3 females I wanted to put together and they're loving it...not having any previous luck, I do not use live plants, but they are still enjoying the new environment

Eventually I'll decide which female from them to add to my 2nd colony, but I like having an all female tank so I can give females a break if they don't take one on their own.

Agreed about the males together...I have heard of it done in large cages, but wonder why ppl take the risk.

I was told by another breeder you can keep two males together if they have never been with females. I do have a friend with two males together, but neither is fully grown. They are both definately males, at this point their bulges are pretty full, and they live together in a 10 gallon without a problem. I also have seen other geckos displayed in 55 gallon large colonies with multiple males, provided there were many females to distract them. The downside, if they breed, you don't know who either parent is. Overall, I wouln't try it unless you have some place to put the second male if there is a problem.
