Cage to hang on wall..

mike d Dec 14, 2005 03:55 PM

Hello,

I would like to build a cage for my Uromastyx that i could hang on my wall at the foot of my bed. i have limited space in my rook so this is really the best option for me. but im not really sure how to go about building the cage so it will have enough support to stay on the wall when fully decorated.. i was going to build it so i could tie it into two walls. not exactly sure how to explain it. but any help or pics will be helpfull..

Thanks Mike D

first you will have to find studs on the wall you plan to attach the cage to ...
i would say a good idea would be maybe to build a platform for the cage to sit on ...
to do this i would attach a 2x4 horizontally the length of the desired cage and make srue it hits at least two studs. then i would make a box frame off of that with 2x4s and at each end make a 45 degree angle brace back to the two studs. this should support your cage very good.
if you would like a more built in look and have the ability, i would then cover the entire shelf and braces with drywall and use mesh tape on the corners where it contacts the wall. with some spackle and paint it should look like it was part of the house from the begining.
good luck

mesh tape is what you use on cracks or connections of drywall to give it strength and prevent it from just cracking there again.
you spackle over it, and you will never notice it when your are done. many people still do use what i think is called drywall tape. its used in the corners of new homes and such for the same reason mesh tape is used, so that the spackle doesnt just sink through and has something to grab onto. you could use that but i find mesh tape to be much better.
good luck with it.

Go to the Cages, Terrariums, Ponds, Aquariums Photo Gallery here on Kingsnake and put "Hanging" in the search engine. You will see an interesting hanging cage from back in '03. It is too "Scandinavian" for my taste, but thought-provoking if you're considering this type of project.
