Updated Crystal Ball Photos

Python Dreams Dec 14, 2005 06:28 PM

I have been pretty busy lately and have not had time to post as much on the forums.... I have seen a few people asking questions so I figured I would update everyone. The Crystal Ball just shed last week and is probably over 400 grams. She was produced by breeding a Mojave to a relatively normal looking female and I will hopefully have more answers on her genetics in the next couple years... She only gets better with age!
Let me know what you think,

My theory on the genetics:

Mojave was het albino, as was normal female.
That right there looks like an albino mojave in my mind...

I mean, I dunno if they already exist,
if so, someone prove me wrong.

But that is my guess.

Beautiful snake though. Keep the pics coming.

Or maybe caramel?

But this new picture really shows off the dark head like the apparent homozygous mojave. Maybe mom was yet another allele (different mutation of the same gene) as the rest of the lesser/Mojave/phantom/Vin Russo/butter?/dilute? group. It's looking like the Vin Russo "high yellow lemons" and perhaps even the het dilute offspring of platy daddy are less standout variations. Maybe mom is yet another toward the "normal" looking end. Would be nice to know if she has a clear belly or any other common traits. To bad the Crystal is a "she" as it would be interesting to see if bred to normals it produces a 50/50 split of mojave's and whatever mom is indicating a connection between the genes or if there are some normals and crystals indicating unlinked genes. Or even nothing like mom indicating something recessive in here.

If it is albino, it would have red eyes.

yeah. that would be really helpful. we all want to start scouring our local petstores to see if we can find one of those normal looking females too.

thanks!

She is insane. Hopefully you can produce a few more this season.

Good luck,
Matt

Tom, she is looking AWESOME!!! Your Pastel Mojave is gorgeous too!!! Glad to see they are doing so well for you.

You have a great project in the Crystal Ball and I'd love to see you produce a male Crystal Ball.

p.s. Try and keep warm while riding that bike of yours

so. just going by what little i know about genetics, one of two things must have happened.

1. it's not a normal female at all and carried "half" of a simple recessive trait that matched with the other "half" of a simple recessive trait that was in the mojave male. (wow that must be like a million to one shot)

2. the normal looking female is actually co-dom for something that combined well with the mojave traits. (still must be a million to one shot.)

does that sound close?

Thanks for the responses everyone!!!!!
Basically I am keeping the Mom under wraps for a little while til I can figure out what is going on.... I have the parents breeding again along with the father bred to a Pastel produced from the mother... It will be interesting to see how and if I produce more... There is also the possibility that someone else might produce a Crystal which would help answer questions. I really know nothing about genetics (just a basic understanding) so I think these might be options...
1.Spontaneous mutation...
2.Recessive --- Possibly the mother is the Homozygous trait mixed with the Father who would have to be a Het. Then mixed with a Mojave it creates The Crystal.
3.Recessive 2 --- The Mother is a Het... The father is a Het. The Crystal is the end result possibly mixed with the Mojave... If not mixed then a Crystal could maybe be produced without a Mojave present (highly unlikely, 0% possibility IMO)
4.Co-Dom --- The Crystal is the cross of a Co-Dom or Dominant trait.... I don't know how it would work, since there was also a Special Mojave in the clutch... Who knows???
5.Hidden Gene --- Maybe something like the Platty where there is some gene that is in there somewhere that is tweaking things a bit....
Again, I have no real idea and these are all guestimates.... I don't even have enough knowledge of genetics to even put thes ideas in writing! I have yet to release anything from that clutch and I hope to be able to get to the bottom of this.... I can see her looking kinda like a Lavendar Albino Mojave (since there is Lavendar borders), but she does have blue eyes with red slits..... Next year will be exciting, but the following will be the good one!

Given the head being darker and they eyes being blue both like the homozygous mojave I'm leaning more and more to it being a double het mojave and whatever mom is and that mom being yet another mutation of the same gene as mojave. The only wrench in this is the "special mojave" sibling. Do you have a pic handy? What gender is it?

Also, for the previous poster, I don't think the odds of your #2 would be nearly 1,000,000 to 1 given all the things we already know or suspect will be compatible with mojave and each other (lesser, phantom, butter, Vin Russo, "dilute". The "Baker” gene may be yet another.
