What does everyone think about hybrids

tsusnakeguy Dec 14, 2005 10:01 PM

I have started to really like corn snakes and I have 5 of my own right now. When I get to breeding them I have been thinking about what I want to breed. I see a lot of creamsicles around and there are also jungles and rootbeers and these are all hybrids of some sort, some not as extreme as others but still hybrids. I wanted to know what everyone thought about crossing E. g. guttata with other species or subspecies of snakes. I was just curious of everyone elses opinions.

Most people don't like the hybrids. I don't mind it as long as you represent the bloodlines properly, and your clients represent the bloolines accurately, and their clients represent the bloodlines accurately, until the bloodline ends.

You'll find a group of vocal people out there who are rabidly anti-hybrid. The biggest concern seems to be for the potential of hybrid corns to be mis-represented or to have their non-corn ancestry forgotten several generations down the line, leading to the potential of a hybrid line winding up represented as "pure" corn.

Me, I think hybrids can be pretty.

somehow I deleted my response.
As far as king/corns, milk corns (suach as corndurons), gopher/corns and similar hybrids aren't really my favorites.
Some are absolutely stunning, I just don't any desires to delve that deep into hybrids.
Now, when it comes to emoryi/corns.....Love 'em!!!

Personally, I don't like hybrids bt. species, but I do cross corns with Great Plains ratsnakes. I don't see this as a hybrid, although others do. I look at a GPR as a type of corn. Most worry that the GPR genes will get into snakes someone will sell as pure corn someday. Not to worry about mine though because it's just the opposite. I prefer the GPR morphs and want to make my own creamsicles and cinnamons, etc. If anything mine will be heavy on the GPR genes. I think the only way you can be positive that you have pure genes is to start with w/c snakes. I prefer localities too

Cheers....TC

PS: I believe cinnamons and rootbeers are crosses with hypos.

Cinnamons are hypo emoryi/corn
rootbeers are the "normal" emoryi/corns.

What would we call this one then, Jimme, a cinnamon or a root beer...?

It's a cross between a Southern GP rat and a hypo corn

I would call it beautiful.
But, if it is a cross between a great plains and a hypo corn in the F1 generation it is a rootbeer.
It is basically rootbeer het cinnamon (hypo)
how many of those do you have?
