owner of new Dumeril with feeding issues

scherzo953 Dec 14, 2005 11:03 PM

I bought a new baby Dumeril 2 weeks ago at the reptile show in Atlanta and he hasn't eaten since I got him and I'm afraid of something being wrong. The people i got him from at the reptile show assured me he eats live food. I've tried to feed him everything from fuzzies to small adult mice and he'll strike at the hoppers and small adults, but won't kill them and he wants nothing to do with the fuzzies. The temps seem correct but perhaps there is something about Dumerils that i jsut don't know...is this common for them to not eat? I mean, if he wasn't hungry, why would he still strike at it? If i've tried every size i know of, what should be my next step?

put him in a rubbermaid show box one of the ;little ones maybe a ft long, stick and inch of aspen shavings in and a water bowl(thats it nothing else) put him in and place it in a area that is 75-78 degrees, get rid of all the lamps heat pads etc, just place him in a room or area that stays those temps all the time, give it 7-10 days and offer him a live white hopper mouse, that right there works for me ever single time, if he refuses the first time give it 7 days before you offer food again, its probally not a bad idea to put the rubbermaid shoe box inside a 10gal aqurium as they can pop the lids off sometimes, that works for me every time

Classic Dums frozen feeders

I will definately try that. Right about now I'm ready to try anything! I"m just afraid that my apartment tends to get below 75 degrees at times (more like around 70 degrees). Is that too cold? If so, what can I do to heat him up in the plastic container?

Jason and Danica have it exactly right, I've never had a baby Dumeril's refuse live food with that method. Being able to bury under the aspen is key for the little ones. If the room is really too cold you could do something with a plain old heat pad that can be found in a drug store or Walmart. Just use the lowest setting and if it's still too hot, wrap a towel or something around it. Place it under or against one end of the shoebox.
