weird cricket question

SBShortie Jul 23, 2003 09:18 PM

This is hard to start cuz I am really out of it right now...but I'll try. Maybe a month ago I ordered 250 1/4 crickets from a website. When those started to get low I ordered another batch. When I added in the new batch I seemed to have more crickets than I knew what to do with. But now it seems like they have disappeared. Is there any chance that the older/bigger crickets ate the newer ones? Thanks!

I'd say the bigger ones are probably eating well, LOL Remember Shortie, crickets are CANIBALISTIC, they will eat each other , eat through tiny lizards, and bite and annoy bigger lizards thoughout the night as the lizard tries to sleep. Acually nasty little BUGGERS with nice voices !!! Eve

voices that I referred to, YES I know it is not really their voice ( the chirping) but their legs rubbing together that creates the sound !!!! LOL Eve

youd set up a lab and study crickets all day long, but its much more fun to watch em get eaten by lizards

...or these Camel Crickets LOL. This species does not *sing*, so I'm trying a breeding colony composed of members collected at two sites: Some are from the cave where all the salamanders are, the others are from a bathroom closet in my son-in-law's house.
They seem to dislike the usual foods I give my *normal* house crickets.... supposedly prefer paper products and decaying vegetation. I'm still trying to decide how I feel about a feeder insect that has been gut-loaded with Q-tips, hair balls and used tissues....

LOL

Strange Bed fellows, don't even sing what good are they? Unless you use them for recycling paper products hehhehehhehe Eve

CollardGuy Jul 24, 2003 03:41 PM

You might as well feed them dust.

Yeah, old Q-tips, little corners of tissue paper, DUST bunnies... What else is there to eat in a dark bathroom closet?
Wait, once again I don't want to know.

and we both agree it is quite relaxing, like camping out !!! LOL
Between the crickets and the treefrogs quacking like ducks all night its a natural sleeping experience everyone should try, LMAO Eve

I am a mortal enemy of crickets. A few years ago the house I lived in had a bedroom (which i slept in) that had a boarded up door to the outside. One night I had been trying to go to sleep for an hour, got up, turned on the light because I heard THEM, and there on the door, was probably a hundred or more of them jumping around the door, in my bed, and on the floor. I hate crickets. Somebody get me a T shirt.

Brockn Jul 23, 2003 10:32 PM

when you received the 250 1/4 crickets from the website, did you check to make sure they included the 1/4 cricket in the shipment?? Just wanted to confirm that you didn't get gypped on your order; otherwise, (cricket) heads are going to roll! LOL (j/k)

its likely, crickets are not picky eaters, they will try to eat everything, it may help to add more cardboard egg cartons (if you dont have any, its a good idea to add a few start) also, crumpled up brown paper bags seems to work very well

Seriosly though if you want to keep them from eating each other, feed them something high in nutrients, like veggies, not cardboard.
