Can a snake be "pregnant" at this time of year?

xblackheart Dec 15, 2005 11:29 AM

I just bought a corn from someone that "rescues" reptiles. They mentioned she might be pregnant. Her scales are stretched like she was full of eggs (or like right after she eats a mouse, but down the lower half, at least, of her body). I do not feel eggs as she moves, but then again I've never had the pleasure to see a "pregnant" snake. Could someone have put her through brumation at the wrong time of year or do accidents happen. I thought they needed to go into brumation to be furtile. I also thought to put them through that at the wrong time of year is a pain because you have to regulate day hours and temps closely. Someone help me out here.

Although most colubrid snakes need to be cycled in order to successfully bred, some will breed without it. It is not absolutely necessary to have a "fertile" snake. Many people have kept their colubrids in the same tank and because of seasonal changes the snakes decided it was time to breed on their own. Its not real common but it does happen. If you think she is gravid, give her a little extra belly heat and try not to handle her as much. They tend to get a little grouchy when gravid.
