Supply and Demand?

davester Dec 15, 2005 06:36 PM

I know you guys have probably gone over this question many times before. Here lately it seems a "good" pair of pastels is hard to come by. Do you think supply is low from everyone holding on to them for future projects? The demand is deffinetly there because pastels are about the most "affordable" morph but yet I see price dropping especially on males. I guess my question is this, what do you think the future holds for the pastel and the super pastel. Will the "Big Boys" always want them as far as trade value too?
Thanks any replies are appriciated!!

I am fairly new to breeding balls, but I have talked with a lot of breeders and brokers of ball pythons about this same subject. Some think that putting money in a nice pastel is a waste of time and others figure it to be an exceptional value considering the eye appeal. I personally think that the super and the bumble bee are some of the best looking balls out there. To answer your questions... I do not think supply is low, I think breeders are holding back females to control prices. As far as trade value I don't believe pastel's will ever have any trading power with an established breeder. I do think that you will see a giant growth of sales of designer balls with the pastel being the most affordable. The future of the pastel and the super is excellent as long as you target the correct audience. This is my personal opinion on the subject.

I know a number of guys who kept their female pastels (or at the very least, all their nicest ones) back this year, rather than dumping them at $1,000 a pop. It's hardly even worth selling a nice female pastel for that kind of money when you think about what you can do with that snake in a couple years.

As far as investments go, compare pastels to albinos...the albino is the better investment, right? It is until you look at pastels as "het super pastels" and consider what supers are worth. Dollar for dollar, pastels still look pretty good when you think of it that way.

Plus, you can't forget all the awesome combos like Pewters, Pastel Clowns, Bumble/Killer Bee, Pastel Pieds, Pastel Ghosts, etc.
