Hi, your talking about the sand in the cracks between the tiles right?

I had to do something like that in order to set up my tanks. The two 20 gal tanks that i have come with a hole in the bottom for a cord to fit through. The *plug* used to prevent substrate from falling through is high thus a tile won't lay flat on the bottom of the tank. So i put a thin layer of sand down as deep as the plug (about1/8" then laid the tile on top. To prevent sand from coming up along the sides, i placed the tile up against the glass at the front then put large pebbles/rocks in the space at the back of the tank. I used 12x12" tiles which actually are a bit smaller so theres always a space around it.

I'll post some pics soon.
