A few mocquardi.

RandyWhittington Dec 15, 2005 10:36 PM

I've always had a thing for all the beauty species but here's a little tribute to a very underrated one.
This girl is a little over 7ft and is the only EXTREMELY aggressive one I have. She keeps you on your toes when handling her. This clutch is from a breeding to an albino male. I hope I dont bore yall with to many pics of them. Randy W.

This guy is a little under 6ft. He is the most aggressive feeder out of any mocquardi I have. Once the scent of thawed rodents is in the air he will rush to the front of his enclosure and nail the plexiglass every time you pass until you throw him his rat. When I open his drawer and drop in his meal he will grab my hand if I'm not careful which is unusual for a mocquardi as they dont tend to be nearly as bold as taiwans or even say my blues.

This girl is about 5.5ft. This picture is about a year old. She is bigger and lighter yellow now.

This picture is old. She's a lot bigger now.

This guy has a little different look. He is not quite as light as some others but has nice pattern. He is another father.

Taiwans are generally the calmest of the beauty snakes but you have to be very very careful during feeding time. If they know food is around, anything including your face can be fair game when it's time to eat.
As long as it's not feeding time, their laid back attitude, large adult size for a colubrid and beautiful markings make them a really cool handling snake. Randy

this might sound silly but i dont know so im gonna ask what's the difference between a mocquardi and a tawain they look so similar. i currently have a blue beauty they are great snakes mines an 05 only a few months but shes a great snake to handle a little flighty but thats it never been nipped or nething i love the species.. also if you could whats the differences between all the beauties in regards to size, aggresiveness, and i like those albinos id like to get some more but i dont know where to get em by me i got my girl up at a petshop by school which the guy said it was very rare fo him to get and didnt want to sell it to me, haa, but igot her,, any info would be great thanks! Beautiful snakes

The difference is that they are different subspecies, depending on who you talk to Orthriophis taeniura has about 7 subspecies, which include mocquardi, ridleyi, friesi and yunnanensis (can't remember the others right now). ridleyi is the stunning cave dwelling ratsnake, the others are mainly the yellow to olive colours with black patterning, they vary in the exact colouring and the patterning of the black, for example the taiwan beauty ssp friesi, has what is best described as a series of black bowties down the middle of the back where as yunnanensis has a series of crosses instead. They also vary in size, ssp taeniura gets about 6 feetlong but has a thicker girth than a similar size friesi but friesi gets much longer often over 8 foot long (my male is about 9 feet long at the moment and is still growing)
Most of the subspecies are top out at about 6 foot long except friesi, ridleyi and the blue beauty which still doesn't have a scientific name(?, if anyone knows different please enlighten me! I know grabowskyi was a maybe for them at one time) as to size I just have to mention that as with anything there are exceptions and captive bred animals can and often do exceed what are generally accepted as maximum sizes for particular subspecies. There are also differences in temperaments, I trust my taiwans (except when their hungry ) to handle freely but I wouldn't trust a ridleyi. Sorry if this is a bit long and a lot to take in but this is just a small snippet about beauty snakes, I think they are fantastic, they are just a world away from the american ratsnakes, which I also think are great but I love the diffrences.
