The difference is that they are different subspecies, depending on who you talk to Orthriophis taeniura has about 7 subspecies, which include mocquardi, ridleyi, friesi and yunnanensis (can't remember the others right now). ridleyi is the stunning cave dwelling ratsnake, the others are mainly the yellow to olive colours with black patterning, they vary in the exact colouring and the patterning of the black, for example the taiwan beauty ssp friesi, has what is best described as a series of black bowties down the middle of the back where as yunnanensis has a series of crosses instead. They also vary in size, ssp taeniura gets about 6 feetlong but has a thicker girth than a similar size friesi but friesi gets much longer often over 8 foot long (my male is about 9 feet long at the moment and is still growing)
Most of the subspecies are top out at about 6 foot long except friesi, ridleyi and the blue beauty which still doesn't have a scientific name(?, if anyone knows different please enlighten me! I know grabowskyi was a maybe for them at one time) as to size I just have to mention that as with anything there are exceptions and captive bred animals can and often do exceed what are generally accepted as maximum sizes for particular subspecies. There are also differences in temperaments, I trust my taiwans (except when their hungry
) to handle freely but I wouldn't trust a ridleyi. Sorry if this is a bit long and a lot to take in but this is just a small snippet about beauty snakes, I think they are fantastic, they are just a world away from the american ratsnakes, which I also think are great but I love the diffrences.
