Frog tank background

jleahl Dec 16, 2005 07:25 PM

I am building a home for a White's tree frog in a 29g high tank. I decided to go with the expanding foam/weldbond coconut fiber peat moss for the background. I am putting a waterfall in one corner, which I decided to try covering with weldbond mixed with sand. Question is this: both finished surfaces (sand AND coconut) are quite rough. It doesn't seem like something I'd like to sit or climb on if I were a frog. Does anybody else do something to remedy the roughness?

when i use foam i use vivarium mortar, lower pH and non-toxic. to that i mix in peat moss and handpack the foam for a strata effect with various tools. in your case, i wouldn't use sand but just milled peat moss and with a handsprayer wetten the mortar mix you're using on the surface and top that with a bit more peat.
this will in time moss over and if you imbed some tree fern panel pieces in some areas, you can also add some epiphytes which would look great!

Thanks for the reply...your tank looks great! I think what I'll do is spread a very thin layer of silicone over the roughest parts, then pat some peat moss mix on top of that. I have one section that's covered in cork bark, and I'm planning on putting tree fern panels on the sides. Definitely epiphytes will be in there; I have three small pots imbedded in the backround, for bigger plants (pothos, etc). We'll see how it works out. Any other advice would be appreciated!

when you use silicone, make sure its the brown kind, it looks much better when the cocofiber, or moss wears off ( and it will )
the brown silicone will show through instead of clear or black.
