Possibly sick red ackie Need some help...

craigr Dec 16, 2005 09:25 PM

My ackie slightly opens his mouth briefly every 30 seconds or so which I just noticed tonight. He does this both on the hot end and cool end of the cage. I have heard that mouth gaping is a sign of intestinal infection. Could this possibly be that? If so, and if you have ever dealt with that, what medications have you used that are effective. It's not really worrysome right now but could possibly turn for the worse. I would like to treat him anyways to be safe. I have read about 3 different types of intestinal infections, but what type seems to be the most common. Any help/feedback would greatly be appreciated. Thanks Forum.

Craig

Every once in a while is one thing, every 30 seconds sounds like open mouth breathing.

Laboured breathing can be caused by a number of problems. Tumours, foreign bodies or any space occupying swellings can put pressure on the lungs. Of course there's your ever common upper respiratory disease and pneumonia.

If you're not a vet, take your feller to one. Bring your wallet too.
