Housing common snapper

start2finish01 Dec 17, 2005 02:23 PM

I have a young common that has a 3" carapace. What is the best way to keep it. I currently have it in a 10 gallon tank with a fluval and a flat rock so the turtle can rest on, but should I have a spot where it can completely get out of the water? if so what is the best method? thanks

I've found snappers the size of yours in the forest before so it might appreciate a land surface. Re-arranging rock surfaces or entirely customizing your tank are two options.

I will take that into consideration, thanks for your help.

I would say that you'd need at least a 20 gallon for a snapper that size. They are really good swimmers and would probably appreciate more room. Also, they will need a basking spot(totally dry land or rock area). Common snappers can grow fast so be prepared to have a 55 gallon or larger tank to move them into in the future. Right now, I have my year-old common in a 125 gallon tank and his carapace length is 7 3/4". You can see pics of him at http://photobucket.com/albums/y224/turtleman85.
