Axanthics, going out of style, or sleeper to buy now?

EmberBall Dec 17, 2005 11:27 PM

My SK line Het Axanthics produced 7 eggs last year, only three hatched, but only two came out of the egg. Of course, the only Axanthic was the one that did not make it out of the egg alive, just my luck. The adult Hets are mating again, hoping for another Axanthic, or three, that actually make it.

I find it hard to believe that nobody has produced a true Ghost by now. Assuming that one has not been produced, when one actually hatches, and if it looks really nice, do you think the Axanthic price will go up, or is the price pretty much set, and just more will sell at the going rate?

If you have a nice Axanthic, can you post a baby pic and a recent pic?

Dave

If you've been in this hobby for a few years, just think back to the days when the ghost/hypo seemed to be going out of style. Not too many post in the forum, not very many in the classifieds, and when they did get posted, they were fairly cheap. Adult males were posted for an asking price of $800 and could be purchased for much less.
There are a lot of axanthics in collections and not many being offered. Breeders are working them and keeping them for a reason. They would not just hold onto them if all they were doing is taking up space and consuming food. It takes a few years more to bring recessive morphs to market. Most of what your seeing in the classifieds and in the forums(to generate interest)is the co-dom/dom morphs. The window of opportunity with those can be short and the market can get flooded quickly. When more of the double recessive morphs are produced and recessive co-dom combinations come to market, there will be a demand and higher prices.
The true ghost, just like the snow, is a 1 in 16 shot when breeding double het to double het. How many 16 egg clutches have you seen? I know of one breeder that has missed at least two seasons. If someone has produced a true ghost, I haven't seen it. Just wait to see what happens when someone does produce it or share pics in this forum. I'm sure you'll see more interest in axanthics within a day or two.
Look at the other combinations. Silver Pastels are awesome and Kevin has at least one that has been posted here. I haven't seen a silver spider but I'll bet it will look real nice. Now that albinos are coming down I think more people will be willing to try for the snow. That morph is being overshadowed by the other white snake but that may change.

Just my opinion but look at the signs. The axanthic didn't fall of the face of the earth. They're not being dumped in the classifieds. They're not being dumped to the wholesalers and they are not in pet stores.
If you like axanthics, work the morph, produce something that is not easily recreated in a year like the pastel. You'll be rewarded for your time and effort.

Axanthic and Albino make a Snow, Axanthic and what makes a "true ghost".

Did you see the earlier post with a Axanthic, Pastel? Awesome, now imagine a Hypo, Axanthic, Pastel it will be incredible! I think it will become a top morph an all black and white snake. In my opinion Snows(Axanthic, Albino) are not very appealing because there is no pattern!
