Herpin' Wisconsin in the Winter....

Keith Hillson Dec 18, 2005 09:56 AM

Well after reading posts by you guys I decided to do a little road cruisin' yesterday to see what I could find. Temps were about 21 degree's with a healthy blanket of snow on the road and ground. As I rounded a bend I saw what the locals refer to as the "Hooded Bitey Snake". He looked as if he had recently eaten so I left him alone.

I decided to go on foot and see what was out there but I had a hard time finding AC as it was under many inches of snow. I did however smell smoke and hangin in a tree was the "Northern Henpecked Treefrog". I was able to identify him by the fact he was out havin' a smoke in the cold (instead of his warm hibernaculum)due to his wifes constant nagging about his bad habits and coldblooded ways.

So I for one have a different view on Winter Herpin up north.

Thats too funny Keith! I do have to ask, did you take a thermal core temp? Did you offer it a mouse? hahaha Phil

Keith Hillson Dec 18, 2005 02:45 PM

I was gonna get a core temp but that snake didnt seem to agreeable to a thermometer up its arse. Maybe if I took it out for dinner first ? lol

If you knew enough to look beyond the smoking treefrog in the picture you might learn enough so that your snakes weren't treated miserably. ha ha. But you continue to believe what you think you already know instead of picking up on the wisdom that I am not quite imparting. Sad, really.

Do I get poster of the year now?

There are several things wrong here. First, the hooded bitey snake is well known to be approachable after a meal. As long as you take a stick and irritate the h*ll out of it first, it shouldn't mind handling. Besides that, the named "bitey" is a misnomer. Really they're just very affetionate, like Europeans. For example, according to Master Shake, the French have to unhinge their jaw to show love.

Second, you're making too many assumptions to fit into your little comfortable paradigms. I personally have seen bachelor tree frogs smoking outside while waiting for their friends to show up -- who is to say that one isn't a bachelor, too? And even if he has a wife, she might have nothing to do with it. Maybe he just wanted some air. Or maybe he's an adolescent trying to look cool. Or maybe it's a female trying to lose weight. Until you study these things and think about them in a different way, or gather lots of peyote buttons in the desert, you'll never know. Just some things to think about. I'm sure the right cactus grows somewhere under that snow. Just dig around a bit.

NOW THAT'S FUNNY!!!!!!LOLOLOL!!! It's good you got out and looked around, Keith, I suggest deeper research also, as those were some of the more commonly known reptiles and 'phibs in your area. What about those with more secretive habits? Keep digging and think outside the box!
