Important feeding question for baby hognose...........

rj1204 Dec 18, 2005 11:30 AM

Im new to the hognose snake and just bought a baby at the reptile show. The snake is about as thick as an earthworm and the breeder told me he is eating f/t pinkies. The pinkies are much thicker then he is.....is this ok? I know I have read not to feed more then the thickness of the snake. Thanks for any advise.

Hognoses are much more pliable than most small baby snakes...so the rule of thumb can be overlooked with them more or less. Did the breeder say if it was eating mouse pinks or rat pinks?

I got my '05 from a friend who breeds when he was approx. 2 mos. He was eating live pinks. First time I fed him it took him a while and was a bit of a gruesome affair, but he got the pinkie down fine. He's much quicker now that he's gotten a bit bigger. LOL!

they said he is eating f/t mouse pinkies. I'll let him settle down a little more and try feeding him in a couple of days.

The temps in my cage at night are about 70 at one end and 80 at the other.....a couple degrees more during the day. Is this ok? He has been hanging out at the 70 degree end. Ive been looking for a good book but havent found one yet. Thanks for any advice and I appreciate the feeding advice. If ya'll can recommend any good websites (caresheets), I would really appreciate that too.

The temps on the warm side are far too cool for hognose. Read the link below.
