About marble for substrate

rjward97 Jul 23, 2003 11:19 PM

I really like the look of some marble pieces I have. And I like the look of the way a few of you have your tanks set up with tiles and sand between them. The marble pieces I have are med-large size pieces(1 inch by 6 inches by 10 inches or so)My question is how do I go about sterlizing the marble? Can I soak it in bleach? cook it? microwave it? It has been outside for many years.. But it looks so nice : ) Is it possible to use it? Will it be ok on top of a heat spot? Or should I just go buy some tile?
THANX!!!

soak in 10% bleach half an hour then let air out or bake in the oven 375-400F 30-45min (you may want to try a piece first to see if it cracks in the heat or not)

Well, the thing I would be really worryed about is the leo trying to eat it. Leos have been know to try and eat their sustrate, and if he/she did manage to eat one it would cause a severe impaction :-S. also, it would be really hard for the leo to move around properly and very unatural for him/her and possible cause stress. I would recomend just going with the slate.

Wait, are we talking about marbles as in the little round balls we played with as a kid or marble tiles? If it is marbles then I would say no but if you are talking about marble tiles that's okay but your leo might not have a good grip to walk on since marble tiles are usually smooth. You can just wash the tiles with soap & water.

LOL why would anyone want to put marbles in with a gecko? :P
It used to be smooth, but after 10+ years as stepping stones it has roughened it up nicely. I will scrub it with a stiff brush and then soak it in a bleach solution. Then rinse it and let it dry in the sun(will dry quickly since it is supposed to be 100*F today).
Thanx all for your help.
