Skunk geckos!

KevColubrid Dec 19, 2005 02:04 AM

Hey all,
I just picked up a skunk gecko from a local pet store...for a while I've kept tokays, leopard geckos, tons of different kinds of snakes, etc. I happened to see this little guy for $15, and hearing their care was similar to tokays, I thought, "Why not?" Let me say this...as of now, this is the best $15 I've ever spent. If any of you want a really cool, cheap lizard, try one of these guys. For one, if I could ever call a gecko "friendly", that's what this little guy is. Doesn't mind being held at all, and doesn't seem that skittish. He hasn't attempted to bite me at all, unlike his tokay cousins, which bite me every chance they get. They have the ability to move very quickly when they want to, but for the most part, this guy's pretty cool, just kind of crawling around in his cage not unlike a little cat. And his gecko "smile" is one of the most pronounced I've ever seen. I'd really love to get into breeding these guys someday, as I've heard it isn't done too often. Anyone else have any experience with these guys? Thanks.
Kevin

gekko vittatus are a lot more personable than most think. while most wild caughts are still skittish, they are not overly aggressive and actually breed quite easily. i've been keeping/breeding them for about 3 years, and the white coloration in the CB specimens is just phenomenal. good luck with it and you should definitely try to get a pair to breed them, they are extremely vocal and fun to watch too ( just don't keep them in your bedroom, they are VERY noisy)

I have always thought these guys were cute, never had any, but may one day, they do look happy and very attractive

Best wishes with yours! And Flame I did not know you bred these guys, like to see some pics when you get the chance ,

well, my adults are very bland ( in comparison to some CB specimens) and are almost just a goldish brown color with a faint stripe that gets a bit more noticeable towards the head. they are very jumpy and skittish so i haven't gotten any good pictures, but i'll post when i do.

Hey Flamed, how easy are these guys to sex? I'm fairly certain I've got a female, as I'm not noticing any bulges, so to speak, but I'd like to be sure before I throw another male in there.

an adult male and an adult female are pretty easy to distinguish, the male will have a relatively noticeable hemipenal bulge, and the preanal pores are much more noticeable than the ones on the females ( but both have them). the males are more raised and larger than the females.

Can you keep these with Tokays?

I wouldn't recommend keeping anything but another tokay of a different sex with tokays. Even in keeping tokays in trios, one male and two females, I've ran into problems...sometimes the females form weird heirarchies, and one gecko will wind up really thin due to not being able to get to food or whatever. I've just kind of came to the conclusion that tokays simply LIKE to bite. It's like some weird need they have...if it moves, they must bite it. My big male is a monster, I love him to death, but he's the most aggressive animal I think I've ever seen.

My skunk gecko, on the other hand, is a little sweetheart. Very cool little lizard. I haven't heard any vocalization yet, but once I track down a male, I'm sure I'll see some of that.

Are they as noisy as tokays? I've got six tokays, and they never shut up.
