Turns black as they get older, and I think that they have light white faded rings on them.

IMO Mexican Black King Snakes are Darker.

I didnt even know any milk got that big... That snake in the first picture had to be atleast 7-9 feet probably even 10 if my eyes aren't fooling me.

wpglaeser Dec 19, 2005 07:01 PM

Wow! They look HUGE. Do they get bigger than the Mexican varieties? That first one looked 5-6 feet easy!

accoring to williams, the max size for l.t. gaigae(blk. milks) is 1578 mm....1145 mm for females...;i have heard folks call these the 'poor man's indigo';but they are pretty awesome and impressive in their own right,obviously...the biggest milksnake.glad to see more of them lately in the hobby, and with that, the prices are coming down a little too.also like most 'south of the border' milks, they are a lot easier than the north american types,as far as getting started on pinks-bigger hatchlings, and without the hard-on for lizards for their first meals.

I have to disagree with Nate. I have kept Black Milks as well as MBKs and in my experience most MBKS are very dark brown whereas Gaigeae are blue/black. If you doubt it, put a nice MBK near a bright lite especially after a meal where the scales stretched. Some Are solid black but my experience is the very dark brown is MUCH more common.

BOTH are personal favorites and you can't go wrong with either. And the MBK is cheaper and comes already dark. Check out the posts of MBKs in past posts and the photo gallery and you'll see the dark brown.Plus the Gaigeae are MUCH glossier, they look as though they've been waxed, VERY irradescent. Good luck.

Very nice pics.

Ditto. Blacks are darker, especially certain lines, like the San Antonio Zoo line, which get jet black througout. While Black milks don't quite get to 9 and 10 feet, they certainly get large, like the photo's show. 7 feet isn't uncommon. I have a pair that haven't turned dark yet, but are getting there. Wonderful snakes to work with. Have never refused a meal, no matter what it was! I highly recommend them, if you're thinking about getting some.

>>do they look like the mex black king?

Black Milks are noticeably larger than nigrita. My adult black milks (which are only around 5 feet so far) are about the same size as an average adult eastern king. Like easterns, they often get to 6 feet or larger. Mexican Black Kings rarely get to 5 feet.

As others have said, they are also black, rather than dark brown like nigrita.

............they have very little need for heat,my snake room is kept at 75 degrees and i don't provide any back or belly heat for them.the breeder i got mine from put his in a boa room (82 degrees ) and they shut down, would not eat.these guys are as bullet proof as snakes can get.have fun!

goregrind Dec 23, 2005 10:17 AM
