Wood piles, brush piles and rock piles are a valuable source of shelter for snakes. The most successful pile is one that incorporates different sized spaces among the various components. You can make your pile better looking by planting vines in and around it.

Another method many people use is laying down large peices of tin and coming back and flipping it a few weeks, months or even year later.

You can also use plywood and other flat objects to lay down to flip in the future.

Be carefull when your flipping the boards as there could be poisonous species living under them. Its always best to use a snake hook. You said your from Mass and i dont know what local in mass your from but there may be Copperheads and Timber Rattle snakes so it would be safe to be carefull when flipping boards.

Hope that helped.

All that advise sounds great, but I would stay out of the woods. Forest edges are great places, especially if the forest is bordering old fields, and better yet if a water source is in the vicinity. I have learned that placing cover objects in the field near the border of the forest "attracts" the most snakes.

Good luck and have fun
