Calling all Kansans

cobbweb Dec 19, 2005 06:02 PM

Just wondering if there were any fellow Kansas herpers out there that would be willing to share some good locations to find an abundant amount of reptiles.
A great place to find Collard Lizards is at the state park near Kanopolis Lake. I saw three of them in horsfields canyon and plenty of evidence on the rocks. I also caught a massive bullsnake. A man was even bitten by a Diamond Back Rattlesnake there. Of course they are not native to Kansas but there were some there at one time.

The WDB bite was not supposedly in the field but after collecting and back at either a lab or classroom at KU ? There are laws about collecting Kansas species of herps that includes a hunting license and permits that allows up to only 5 of any specie per that is not on a list of some kind. About the western 2/3rds of Kansas has collareds and about all of Kansas has bull snakes.

There may now be an established population of atrox at Kanopolis. There have been between 5 and 12 specimens catalogued in the museum that I work for here in Kansas...In fact, my roomate is most likely going to do his masters thesis on atrox at Kanopolis. Atrox have never been found to naturally occur within the human constructed political bounderies of KS. They may now be established due to a high school science teacher who is believed to have released several atrox at Kanopolis over the years...

In order to herp in KS you MUST have a valid hunter's license and this only means that you can collect up to 5 individuals of the same species, not subspecies. This does not include SINC, threatened or endangered species.

Horsethief Canyon is a great place to find herps. I would suggest just hunting there. I have found common kingsnakes, milk snakes, bull snakes, massasaugas, great plains ratsnakes, prairie kingsnakes, racers, collared lizards, great plains skinks, northern prairie skinks, texas horned lizards and prairie lizards. Collared Lizards can be found from border to border in KS, not just the western 2/3s.
