The vet came today!

ChameleonTattoo Dec 19, 2005 10:04 PM

It's 8pm. The vet was here at 3:30. She was here for 2 hours. I didn't give her enough credit. She came very prepared, explained every thing to me, walked me through it all. She is actually a very good vet.
She did a swab that we have to wait for tomm for her to take it to her lab.She did 3 different babies fecal samples One from the real sick girl, one with diarhea and no other signs, and one from a baby with now signs of sick.
They have cocidia, round worms, pin worms, and mites. So far.I know your mouths are gaping open at this point. I cryed crocodile tears for an hour.
After doing some serious investigating I have 2 2 possible reasons for this to have happened. 2 Months ago I moved in with my mother. And her 198 (todays count) bearded dragons. Once I questioned her habits I discovered that she does not wash her hands between cages, she does not use bleach water for anything (even washing the cleaning towels), she reuses syringes, toothpicks ect. She even reuses tools without cleaning them at all.
She has on numerous occasions helped with my cams, including when I was gone 3 weeks ago. Which brings me to the other possibility. When I was away from home she bought me a female Amblobie, and a pair of unrelated Tamataves. From 2 different breeders. She didn't quarantine them before introducing them into the cam room. Apparently she doesn't do it with her beardies and didn't understand why I would do it.
So now that I am all cried out and on the border of a nervous breakdown....I have to sit here and wait for her to get home from work so I can be the bearer of bad news and try to figure out how we are going to afford to treat 200 lizards. This is a costly lesson to learn.
The Vet left me with some liquid Baytril (just in case), and liquid trimethoprim, and liquid fenbendazole. Tomm she is going to bring me medicine for the mites and show me how to effectivly dissenfect the house too. And the (I forgot the name) good bacteria medicine you put back in them. I just finished giving all of them medicine. It took me 2 hours just to do the cams. The beardies are next.
A few of them are very sick, so I ask you to pray for my babies. Thanks again for the input and advice. Much appreciated.

Wow, it seems the problems escalted rapidly, thus proving the saying that, if you see a problem with a cham, its probably already dire. However, it sounds like you are in excellent hands and tha tyou vet is capable. I wish you well in the treatment of your collection and establishing proper husbandry of your mothers ebarded dragons.

I'm glad you posted. Often people who post questions concerning problems, do not post again, leaving readers without a follow-up. This post will help others identify, and prevent the same things from occuring, because it does happen too frequently.

Again, thank you, and good luck with the recouperation of your children. I'm always online to talk, listen or pester. Msn: xexiledx@gmail.com

Ah, this makes sense! After I posted yesterday I remembered reading somewhere that a big coccidia infestation can cause smelly feces. Odd that most other parasites don't. Man, you have a lot of work to do disinfecting and isolating all those herps! I can't imagine caring for all those animals without keeping everything basically clean or quarantining new animals! I don't want to offend YOU, but SHE needs some serious evaluation as an animal keeper. There are probably some nasty bacteria complicating things too. Good luck!

The vet will be here today at 2 to bring me the mite medicine ,and explain the bacteria infection to me (yes they have that too).
They're eye problems are directly related to whatever the bacteria infection they have is. And also they are further aggitated by the mites.
I ordered 6 more aluminum screen cages today and am going to pitch the wood. It seems too complicated to try to rid them of the mites.I also separated the 2 that where together.
One that hasnt had his eyes open in days has them open today. YAAAA! I hope he is feeling better. I hope I don't loose anyone. So far so good.
I have to get back to teaching mom cross contamination lessons now.She is receptive. I think she feels really bad about all of this. She called everyone that got a dragon from her in the last 6 months to tell them to get them tested. All my OSHA lessons ect for work in cross contamination payed off right now in more than one way. Who would have known!
Thanks to everyone for their support. I will keep you posted.
