Need some more info on Olives...

hypersquid Dec 20, 2005 01:56 AM

I'm trying (in vain) to find info on this species. Anybody know of a good place for info for Olive pythons (Liasis Olivaceous) and anybody that breeds these?

My twin brother, Dr. Chris Carmichael, keeps and breeds them. If you punch in Malone College and go to the Biology section you will find his email address; he'd be happy to help you out.

I have a 10' pair and have seen breeding activity, and my male is definately producing sperm. Any more info would be helpful. Here is a quick pic of my female in shed.
Thanks,
Jasin

Small male is about 7', large male is 22lbs, 9'. Female is about the same size, 29lbs. I'll see if I can post the pic of the female in her box. She gave up her normal hide box for the damp sphagnum moss clear box. lol...took her about 2 minutes to decide. Tape measure in front of the box is 2'.

I didn't have any luck last year, although there was plenty of breeding. I did a cooling this year on the female and larger male, but not a drastic one. Started in mid october, lasted about a month.

Thanks man,
Very interesting. Every one I have talked with this year that has had good luck with their Olives has said their animals are smaller, 8-10'. I wonder if this is why some people had problems breeding in the past. Every one USED to say they had to be HUGE, 15' or more to breed? Seems to be the opposite? Good luck on the gravid female, and keep us posted, I want another female!!

I talked to Dave Barker the other day about the olives. Seems like they had more luck with thinner snakes as females. You can email me, if you like...and I LIKE the baby Papuan

People have said a lot of really nice things about Jeff Hartwig- he breeds them, and I know he has at least a couple of males left from this year... they were born on 6/11/05.
