Somone waive a wand and fix my Gecko LOL????

jasonw Dec 20, 2005 11:57 AM

SHEESH These Geckos are driving me nuts. Ok I have a whole room at home dedicated to my herps. In that room I keep 22 lizards and currently 5 snakes. All the other individuals I keep readily eat without any problems. Its just this one leopard gecko that just doesn’t seem to like taking food. Alberto is still eating fine without any issues. He did slow down ever so slightly as it got colder outside but still eats 4-6 supper meal worms ever 3-4 days. Kirmy on the other hand has now gone a total of 10 days with no food what so ever. She wont even look at it when I offer it to her. What a pain this is. On 11/28 she came in at 32.50G and just 3 minutes ago she came it at 29.80G. That’s a 2.70G loss in almost a month. Also keep in mind the 32.50 was measured right after a meal and like I said she has not taken any food in 10 days. Maybe that’s the explanation for the 2.70G loss. What do you think? Otherwise she appears healthy.

that could account for some of that difference. It really does sound like Kirmy is brumating despite your wish for her not to. A gram or two I would not worry about. Is she otherwise active, or showing signs of slowing behaviour wise too?

She is doing nothing abnormal. At night when her light goes out and the night lights go on she comes out with Alberto and wanders the cage, drinking, licking, basking every thing appears normal she just has no apatite. I normally feed all my herps during the day but perhaps I should try feeding her at night. I have read several references here on this board about offering prey at night.

That would have to be it. I have been hiting the books all day. I have checked and rechecked and even had my wife check and there set up is absolutly perfect. I will offer food as soon as the worms warm up and report back

Well forgot to report back last night. Sorry! Anyway she still would not take any prey. I noticed she was about to shed so I decided to lay off for the day. As of thismorning she is almost compleatly sheded so maybe tonight we will retry it.

She's probably brumating because one of my males did the exact same thing for about a month until one day he saw one of my girls get food then he decided he was hungry. He didn't really lose all that much weight when he wasn't eating but it scared the bleep out of me because I thought he was sick since I didn't know that geckos brumate. I wouldn't worry to much unless she loses more weight or becomes sluggish.

The only problem with it is its been well over a month. My digital record keeping for her did not start until about the time we moved. My earliest record is on 10-28-05 I guess you could say she has lived at least nearly 2 months with this ordeal and still appears fat and healthy. I am sure an individual with a real problem would have caved in long before 2 months of taking very little food. I just finished there new enclosure to. I will take a picture and upload it and post it in a bit “My boys B-day is today so its hard to get free time” 3 years old at last LOL Soon he will get his first pet herp.

I have a male & female both that are brumating right now. The male started about October 1, right now he has eaten nothing at all in 3 weeks. Even though he's eaten from very little to nothing in the past 2 1/2 months, he's only lost 1 grams of weight. My female started this about November 1st, though she does still eat about every 3-4 days and has actually gained like 10 grams in the past 6 weeks LOL Like was said in another post, as long as she otherwise seems healthy I wouldn't worry just yet. I've heard of brumating leos going up to 2 months without eating a thing, I'm sure that would drive me crazy LOL

geckogrl6 Dec 21, 2005 07:43 PM

2 months is a fairly long time for not eating a thing. Even when brumating, I can usually entice them to eat one or two prey items. If this is an adult (and I think I remember it is), just continue to monitor her weight, and try not to go crazy. If she loses more than 5g or so, or her tail starts to shrink noticably, then I would say you have good reason to be concerned. As long as she is otherwise healthy and active, just let it go. If you really need her to eat for your sanity, you can up the temps and start increasing her light cycle artificially. Once you do that, she should start eating in about 2 weeks. Just try to think of her as her way of taking a break from life. Sometimes I wish I could brumate too lol. Good luck, and dont let her stress you out too much. She certainly doesn't sound stressed!

Yeah, I agree 2 months is a long time, I was just saying, I have seen people say they have experienced this with their leos. I will be going crazy if my male goes that long LOL

jasonw Dec 21, 2005 09:19 PM

Oh no dont get me wrong she has eaten in the past 2 months just not a lot. In the past 12 days or so she has taken nothing but noprmaly she will tak 1-2 supper meal worms a week while Alberto takes up to 12 per week
