Are these mites????

waspinator421 Dec 20, 2005 12:40 PM

Holy cow I'm really worried this morning! I went to feed my geckos and my cham some superworms when I noticed tons of these itsy bitsy teeny weeny little white dots crawling all over inside the superworm container. Some got out but I wiped them up. Now... its been a LONG LONG time since I've seen a reptile mite and I don't know if that is what these are. Are superworms little white dots when they are born? I don't see any on my reptiles (thankfully)... but I DON'T want ANY chance of a mite infestation.

All your input will be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Yes they are most likely mites - but not the type that would affect your herps. Since you found them in your Superworm container, they are probably grain mites. They are a pain to get rid of, so your best bet may be to chuck the whole batch, seriously wipe down the area where you kept them, and get a new batch. If it becomes a problem, you could look into getting anti-mite shelf paper to prevent their spread.

Wow, you really gave me some peace of mind there. I already tossed the worms and cleaned up the area. Hopefully no more will emerge. Thanks so much!!

Also rinse the worms in a pasta strainer before you put them in the fresh bedding.

on all surfaces and to clean the container. I had them once and they ARE a real pain! they thrive in high humidity and warmth. good luck!

Where do I get some of this anti mite shelf paper?

Carolina Biological sells it - so does Black Jungle (Blackjungle.com) as well as Vivarium Concepts (www.vivariumconcepts.com).
