A little help with Pixie's please

Grunngg Dec 20, 2005 02:14 PM

I just got my Pixie frog. He's still small, maybe 3in. Right now I have him in a 10gallon tank with ReptiBark and a decent size water dish.

Does my tank seem alright? I know I should probably get something for it to hind behind.
As far as heat, the tank is in a small room with a space heater that keeps it in the upper 70's-80F. Do you think I should have anything else for heat?
Last question: About feeding, the guy at the petstore said to feed 3 large crickets every day. Does this sound right? Or should I feed it more crickets per feeding, and feed every 2-3 days? How often do I feed when I give it goldfish?

Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it.

i would do bed-a-beast instead of reptibark, that may be too dry and rough on the skin. temp seems fine. feeding is different for each frog. bigger meals mean lower frequency. it also depends on how much the frog is willing to take at one feeding. is it a full 3"?

Ok, I can do Bed-A-Beast. I'll hold off until I clean his cage, sinse it's already set up.
About the temp, Like I said, it's about 75-80 in the room. But recently I have been having some trouble with the heater. If the room cools down to 70 over night, is it a big problem? I can get a heat pad, but I'd really rather not have something else plugged in. My heater saps a lot of power, about 1500 watts.
Here's another question for you: Today marks the third day I've had my Pixie. The first night it moved around a good bit, went into the water dish, was just generally active. But now he's found a place in the corner and really wasnt moved much. He's pivited a little, but not really gone anywhere. Do you think everything is alright? I know these guys arent known to be to lively, I just wanted to ask, to be sure. I'm about to go to a pet store to get some stuff for it to hide behind.
3" is just an estimate. I'd rather not pick him up yet, seeing as he's probably still stressed a bit.
I appreciate your help, reptileguy, you're always very informative.

what kind of heater are you using that is using 1500 watts? sounds like he has settled in. 70s is fine for night temps. sounds like you are doing a good job for the little guy.

It's not a tank heater. It's one of those space heaters. I'm pretty sure the box said it's 1500 watts. Keeps the room nice and warm so I don't have to worry terribly about individual heaters.
I went over to PetsMart tonight and got my Pixie one of those mid-sized half-log hides. I was gonna buy crickets for it, but they sold out. I was thinking about buying a comet goldfish for him. If I fed him a 1˝" goldfish, how long do you think I should wait until my next feeding?

depends. his behavior will tell you once you can start to read it right. you will learn to tell by their reaction to you adding food whether it will eat it soon, generally. i would just use individual heaters to save on the electric bill. a few days after feeding it a goldfish i would try some crickets. it may take him a little longer to eat again depending on the exact sizes of him and the goldfish, and the temp in his cage.
