Elaphe dione chersky x orange. *PICS*

wim Dec 20, 2005 02:22 PM

Hello,

I is a long time since I posted a message, but I am back, with pics of Elaphe dione. We crossbreed a chersky female with a chersky, orange coloured male. We were very curious what kind of colours the hatchlings would be. We were kind of disapointed when they hatch because none of them had "special" colours. But we think they will turn into much nicer colours in one year. So lets hope for the best .

Here you can see the female, cherksy.

This is the orange coloured male.

This is an pic of the copulation.

This is one of the hatchlings. you can't see it in the picture but the bellies of the hatchlings are much brighter red-coloured than their dorsal pattern.

(This picture is taken 10 minutes afther he/she hatch, so this is before their first shedding.)

I have recently been admiring these little snakes, and will be getting a pair of Korean Diones from Terry Cox this spring. I am so anxious and excited, I can't wait. In the process of doing my research, I came across your site. I have to say that you have one SWEET collection of these guys. I especially love the black...very BEAUTIFUL. I am wondering though, when breeding these together, would it kind of be like corns? Crossing these two that you pictured, didn't give you anything that you would call "special" colors, but if you bred the offspring back together could you come up with a new color? Just wondering.

BTW those pictured are really nice looking...I especially love the red male...of course I am partial to red.

Hello Paula,

Nice, Terry Cox have beautifull korean diones! The black ones (we call them nigrita) are very beautifull indeed, but they are very hard to keep alive. We think they have some kind of inbreeding in this line. There are 4 people in the world who have these the same for the orange.
Yes, when you crossbreed the hatchlings back together you can get some yellow, red or orange hatchlings.

Here is a picture of a nigrita male from last year.

Wim, those are nice snakes and a beautiful baby.

I understand your disappointment, but the babies do tend to get much lighter as they get older. Here's one of our babies from last June...

...and another baby at a latter date....

I think it's possible that your orange male could be carrying a mutant gene. Have you bred one of his babies back to him, yet? If so, you will find out if is hypo, or whatever. It might just be a colorful form too.

Good luck with those. I sure am having fun with mine

PS: Can you show a pic of the belly pattern? Thanks...

Hello Terry,

Yes, I know they will change colour, so lets hope for the best!
I will send a picture of the belly when they have shed. And those orange male is from the red line of Tula exotarium. So I don't think he have a mutant gene, we don't have bred one of his babies back to him, maybe next year when the other het. orange are mature.
I will keep you informed.

Best wishes in teh next year!

Regards Gidi
ps I must say your koreans are very nice coloured. Much differend than our koreans!

Thanks, Gidi. I always enjoy seeing your dione. I think the black one could be a mutant gene also. It reminds me of the black phase of the Persian ratsnake too (which is just a color phase). Look forward to your results in the future

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Terry
