I have an idea...

gabonica2977 Dec 21, 2005 03:09 PM

...lets take one of the rarest most beautiful pythons in the world (angolans)and cross breed it with one of the most common (ball pythons) Dont get me wrong, I love bps and their mutations(I just bought my first pair of het pieds).
And you avian afficianados, you folks can invest in a hyacinth macaw and then go to the local park or downtown and catch a pigeon and cross breed them to produce a stunning and sought after hybrid bird.
For all the fish freaks out there, I got one for you too.First buy an expensive, rare, beautiful African cichlid. Then come summer visit your local county fair and win a common goldfish.(it's easier than it looks) Breed the two together and BOOM you've just created what every fish hobbyist has dreamed of. You will be the envy of the aquariest world.
I haven't forgotten the equine enthusiests. Simply acquire one of the majestic clydesdales available from a specializes horse breeders out there(I know of one in central Illinois). Next step:Travel out to ol' farmer Browns house and make an offer on one of his best donkeys. Hybridize the two and BAM, you will be regaled by horse lovers for years to come for your foresight and
dedication to the hobby!
I personnally can't wait for an established, healthy, captive population of Boelens pythons to become available.Only then can we proceed to hybridize them with Green tree pythons(Boelendros),Carpet pythons(Boelarpets? Carpeolens?), and scrub pythons(Scuboelens). We can only dream.
I hope I didn't offend anyone by posting this, and apoligize for any punctuation or spelling errors.(I'm new at the manifesto game)But if I changed one mind about hybridization of captive pythons(or any other animal for that matter) then MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

good idea

why not breed yourself with a drunken whino homeless lady while you are at it and help create more people for in the KS forums?...

........(yes whino was spelled that way on purpose).....

anyways

cludsdales and burros .....hmmmmmmmm make big mules......wonder if anyone ever tried that?.......(yea).....

I really like the pigeon and hyacinth idea...that would actually help make the hyacinths more popular and more plentiful.....make them fly slower to so we can shoot them easier.....

some hybrids are cool and some are dumb.......

just like people.....

........and yes....hybrid angolan/ balls sell........betcha.....

"Man did I ever strike a nerve"

It looks to me as that is just what you wanted to do.

Just because you don't like hybirds doesn't mean it's wrong or anything, it just means you don't like them.

And I realy don't think it matters to anyone else if you do or don't like them!

Are you aware that most meats, fruits and vegetables on the market today are hybridized? The clothes you wear are most likely made from hybridized cottons? Hybrid animals are used daily in reserch and most likely contributed to those medications you take to make you well, help fight disease, find cures and treatments, etc.

You are entitled to your opinion on hybrids - but it appears a bit hypocritical.

Personnally I think an Angolan Ball is one of the most beautiful snakes in existance - the best of both beautiful snakes.

Matter of opinion. That's what this is all about. Some think a hybrid Angolan x Ball is more appealing than an Angolan or a Ball pyhton. I don't. For twenty years I've waited for Angolan pythons to break into mainstream herptoculture, and when they finally did, it seems everyone is in a rush to hybridize these wonderful snakes. I know that purebred Angolans are still available, but for how long. Hybridization threatens the bloodline. We are talking about a limited resource here. Angolansaen't imported in mass numbers like other snakes, there just aren't many out there, and I fear in ten years or so
the bloodlines will be tainted. As far as food and clothing are concerned, that is a different matter. This is the exotic animal trade I wish to address. Ask any zoologist or zookeeper and I think that they will agree with me that hybridization (espcially in a rare species) is a bad idea.

I am sure that you have nothing to worry about, there will be plenty of angolans for a long time, I know 2 people in mesa, AZ who are breeding them to angolans, and also breeding them to balls, will they hit the odds of hatching a hybrid, I dont know they have only had one copulation, but at least they are keeping it pure while experimenting, hybrids are no big deal, eleven years ago people thought that crested geckos were extinct, now they are imported, and a very common reptile pet, I personally have 4 of them, and people are still trying to hybridize them with other gecko species, so what it is a matter of opinion, like you said, you dont have to attack people on their opinions, your "I have an idea" post went totally unprovoked,
thanks

Nothing makes me happier than to hear that crested geckos, once thought extinct, are now commonly captive bred and abundant. They are awesome. But people are trying to hybridize them. Why?
I think people are more concerned with profit and not concerned enough with concervation and BIO-DIVERSITY. If all they know about biologyHerpetology stems from the pet trade than they are missing out on the true beauty of the natural world. It does not surprise me that most animals are uncooperative. They know better!!!!

I too think that pure Angolans are in danger of being lost from the hobby and it is tragic. However you are actually pretty lucky that you can probably still find F1 offspring produced from true wild caught pairs. It happens that original collecters and importers move on to different species and complete records tracing the animals to wild caught become hopelessly lost. This has already happened with many Mexican herps, thayeri, greeri, mex mex, knoblochi, Sinaloan milks, Nelson's milks, Jalisco milks; nobody today can trace thier bloodlines to the original stock and while there may be pure stock around there are so many hybrids and crosses that since the records are lost virtually nobody can say their snakes are anything but pure looking.
If you don't want this to happen to Angolans the only thing you can really do is do it yourself and hope that other people jump on the bandwagon. If you keep records of all your animals back to wild caught in 10 or 20 years you may be one of the very few that can prove they have pure Angolans. It may not make you alot of money but it could be a source of pride.

When you wrote your post, did you realize that breeding a horse to a donkey produces a mule and that mules are sterile? However, mules are also very good for certain kinds of work. This hybridization has produced trememdous benefits.
