True chameleons in florida and other non-natives

warmouse4000 Dec 21, 2005 06:28 PM

I've heard about areas in florida where there are colonies of chameleons breeding. Does anyone know what kind of chameleons and where they can be found? Also does anyone know of any other cool spots to see cool non-natives?

As far as I know, they are Veiled Chameleons and they are located in SW Florida near the Fort Meyers area. I've never made it out there to see them myself, but hope to sometime soon. I don't know any specifics however. Hope this helps.

There used to be a small population of Veiled Chameleons near Ft. Meyrs but after numerous trips to look for them this summer(with a local expert), it looks like they are all gone. Many animals were collected as the spot became well known and they (apparently) could not withstand the hunting pressures.
There is a large population of Monitors in Cape Coral though. Personally I don't know how anyone catches them as they are very skittish and real FAST! Look near the canals on the SW side of town.
Then there's always a chance of Burmese Pythons in the Everglades near Miami...
There are lots of non-native geckos that you can find on buildings after dark just about anywhere in Central/South Florida. There are some pics of some of them in the Field Herping forum of the AHA site.
