clarification on substrate

ngiovas Dec 21, 2005 08:06 PM

I need clarification on the prefered substrate for a pacman frog. I have read several posts that recommend either wet paper towels or bed-a-beast. I was just wondering what bed-a-beast is? Isn't it just shredded coconut bark? I wanted to make sure because I have a bunch of coconut bark that I am not using for any other animals right now and I would like to use it for a pacman I am thinking of getting. It isn't bed-a-beast brand, but I assume the brand doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance for your help,
NG

bed-a-beast is a shredded coconut husk substrate that looks like dirt. another brand name is eco-earth. if i were to use a commercial product those would be the only 2 options for me. i prefer either wet paper towels or just shallow water, but im sure you have read about those since you mentioned the wet paper towels.

Ok, this sounds slightly different than what I have. The coconut bedding I have is made by T-Rex and is slightly larger - it doesn't look like dirt.

I will probably stick with towels for now.

I like to use sphagnum peat moss b/c it keeps the moisture and is easy to clean and maintain as well as easy to burrow into.

Straight peat moss has been shown to remove ions from amphibians and has been documented in killing caudates when used as the sole substrate.

Correction..i use Sphagnum moss. The actually moss not the peat moss. Sorry for the confusion. And I am not concerned with the chance of ingestion of the moss b/c my ornate eats off of forceps.

Sphagnum has the same problems as peat is simply decomposed sphagnum.
