New Racks! (PICS)

carl3 Dec 21, 2005 09:50 PM

Here are some more racks I recently built. I keep trying to improve them.....this time I used spacers for the 10 high 32 quart sterilites and they slide in/out like a charm. Once again, I used 1/4 inch expanded PVC for the shelves and added cross-support to the underneath of the bottom shelf. The PVCX board is suprisingly cheap if you find a local manufacturer that makes their own generic version of the Sintra brand. Enjoy!

(oh...final cost of each 10 high rack was appx. $100 each)

Very nice!
I really like that design. If I could find a Chicago area supplier for PVCX I'd start building immediately.

hey, 100$ is not bad for those racks, did the cost include the tubs?

nope...I didn't include the tubs in the total cost. I've had the Sterilites for a while. They are fairly inexpensive anyway....Target sometimes has sales on them. I think the least expensive commercial racks without tubs go for abotu $350 so even when factoring the tub costs, it's still a good deal.

I heat my entire herp room, which saves me a great deal on electric. I still have a gradient since the one end of each container is against the wall and is cooler. Plus, I also have fantastic air flow to prevent stagnant heated cages. However, if I wanted to add heat tape, it would be easy to do for either the back or underneath. I just get so paranoid with heat tape though...every time I have ever tried using it, I have always had a problem.

I'm in the northeast too. Where did you get your PVC? It looks like great stuff to work with. Do you ever have problems with sagging?

carl3 Dec 26, 2005 08:15 AM

I'm near Philadelphia. I got the PVC nearby....email me if you'd like the name of the place (northeastsnakes@aol.com).

No problems with sagging yet. I think I built it sturdy enough that I won't have problems but you never know...I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I added support to the bottom shelf so as long as there are no empty slots without tubs, then there shouldn't be a problem.....and I certainly won't have trouble filling the racks.lol
