Eye problems in my Collared

star Dec 21, 2005 11:30 PM

My female Collared, Squirt, is having eye problems. There is something in the inner corners of her eyes, but I can't tell what it is. I have given her a bath the last three days to try to rinse out her eyes. It seems to have helped a bit in one eye, but the other is still really bad.

Do collards have an inner eyelid or something that could be swollen in the corner of her eye? Could it be sand? What do you reccommend?

One other problem, I think that because her eyes are painful, she's not opening them to be able to eat. I bought liquid food to get her through this, but I can't do anything to get her mouth open to give it to her. Any suggestions will help.

Thank you so much!!

you should be able to brush it out with your finger if its sand, if not, i would seek a vet.

Never mess with this condition, it usually gets worse. Sometimes the eyes will just become stuck shut.

Discharge/ crusty looking sand / or keeping eyes shut can be associated with respiratory infections/ bacterial infections.

Any other signs/symptoms ? Keeping head held high , popping sound when breathing, any discharge mouth/ or eyes all can be signs.

I agree with Tony , best thing to do is call your vet, if this is an infection , your collared will need antibiotics . Infections seem to do a number on these guys fast if let go, I sure hope your lil buddy perks up soon.

Let us know, and take care,
