Hide boxes in a rack?

quantim0 Dec 22, 2005 08:37 AM

I just got my first rack for my BPs (Animal Plastics 1754-10. I just set it up yesterday and got my BPs in this morning. I have hides in with them now, but they take up an awful lot of room in the small tubs. So my question is, does everyone use hides in thier tubs for their BPs? It's dark enough and warm enough without a hide, but it doesn't have the tight fit that they may want. So basically I can't come to a conclusion. Thanks.

I use them in my AP rack but the snakes don't even use them. They stay under their bowls. I leave them in anyway just in case they want them. If you don't use the kind of bowls they can get under, there should be at least something for them to hide in, in my opinion.

I would say that Ball pythons feel secure with hide boxes, even in a rack system. I too have the problem with the hide boxes I was using taking up alot of space. I don't know the name of the company, but it was those black plastic hide boxes sold to the herp community. By the time I had the hide box, water bowl and snake in the tub, it didn't leave much room for any movement for the snake.
How I solved the problem was, one day I was at Walmart, and one of the vendors was putting out Pokemon' type cards in the end caps of each cash regsiter line. The boxes they came in was 6" hiigh by about 4" long. They looked perfect for hide boxes.
I asked if I could have a few to try out, since I knew they were going to be trashed. She said I could have them all if I liked.
She said she is in that store every Tuesday. Endless supply! And free!
I brought them home, cut half circled holes in the side, and WHAM, the snakes love them. And they took up alot less space.
And the water bowls? I found the perfect size at my local BIG LOTS. Cermaic water bowls, heavy and cheap!
So, I guess what I am saying.... Recycle! No, but it does come in handy to re use a product more then once.

I found that when I quit using them alot of my really good feeders stopped feeding as well. I use plastic salad bowls from the dollar store. I cut a hole in the side and pack them pretty good with extra cypress mulch. The snakes love them and it doesnt take up as much room as a box type hide.

I do need to downsize the stuff that is in my tubs. There is almost no room for the snakes to get around.

Looking through the NERD book, I saw they have some hides that have a spot in the top for a water bowl. That would be perfect to save some space. Does anyone know where I could find those??

Tho I haven't seen the book - I would assume they probably use the freedom breeder hides they look like this:

if that's it check freeodm breeders web site.

I use the larger Freedom Breeder hides in my CB-70 tubs and the one Tosha has pictured in the sweaterbox tubs. I also use cereal boxes with the lids torn off. When they get soiled I toss them and replace with a new one. Ron
