Savannah acting 'drunk'

Wyrm Dec 22, 2005 12:03 PM

Hello to all, been reading for quite a while never posted though. I have a bosc (savannah) that I have had for about three years now. He has the most easy going personality of any monitor I have kept, and perfectly healthy, or so I thought. The past week or so he has been acting, for lack of a better word, drunk. It was about his usual feeding time and I went to feed him and he was hungry enough, but he could not seem to steady himself. He would move a little bit and then swing his head down to one side or the other, like he lost control, almost like a lack of coordination. He would look up as I opened the top of his enclosure and then close his eyes as his head swung back down. He has not been able to eat although showing great intrest in his food, he cannot seem to get it in his mouth and down. He moves about fine if a little wobbly that I have noticed. In every other aspect he is fine and you would not notice the strange movements unless you watched him a while. He has never done this before and I am concerned. I have checked the temp and moisture, and have looked him over close up and no bones are broken and nothing out of the ordinary. I have him on cypress mulch. I am going to get a fecal done and possibly some blood if the vet can. I plan to take him withn the next few days. Just was wondering if anyone knew what it could be? Or have experianced such before. As I said, never had any problems with him, he is the more hardy of the monitors I have had experiance with. Anyways thanks for your replies..

here is a link to a thread posted on the sav. forum it may help you. Not sure if it is the samething or not, that would be for the vet to decide. But read through all of the threads posted under that topic you may find something helpful.sick sav

Indeed it does, I thought it might be something viral in nature due to his eye movement and sadly, very sadly it seems so...I will take him to the vet as planned and offer up this notion. I have raised monitors for a few years now and it bothers me that I did not see this sooner, or perhaps somehow I could have prevented such. I feel I have done an injustice to this wonderful animal and can only hope that he will recover. It is truly a sad day. I will do what I can alongside the vet and keep hopes high and thank you again..
