Blackthroat caging

system_of_a_down Dec 22, 2005 12:52 PM

Is a 4 foot tall by 8 foot long by 4 foot wide cage large enough for an adult blackthroat?

I would make it a little longer, like 10ft or so

system_of_a_down Dec 22, 2005 04:08 PM

is the width ok tho???

I'd say that the width is acceptable. The animal shouldn't have any real problem turning around. I for one however would make it wider. Something like twice the SVL.

Males get larger, especially BTs. Her cage (for her alone) is 10ftx5ftx4ft, I wish I would have gone with 12x5x6ft or 12x5x5ft. The bigger the better.

Shes in front of a medium sized monitors cage, this is her cage when I was building it.

She outgrew many cages in her first 2.5 years of life, now shes 4 years old.

How much is the usual length of a female??

What has the better temperament, Peach throat, Black Throat or white throat???

I can name examples of albigs I have or had that prefer one person or another, prefer people to feed them and stay away, prefer us to be gone, would like to bite us, chase us away, yet some that seek us out for contact, but do not like our touch, and a very few that like attention from a few people.
All monitors are individuals, but blue tails I dont know too much about, I dont keep them. I could suggest a monitor (an ackie) but it may dislike you or people in general, it depends.
Look at what you can properly keep, as far as size, feeding, etc then decide from a list of positive features what species fits that list.

it is indeed all relative, and there are always exceptions. but Peachies are typically not big on handling, usually quite flighty, Whitethroats can span a range from "tame" to testy (i have never seen an aggressive one, although really defensive is a different matter).

Blackthroats are typically more predictable and tractable, and the best "handling" monitors of the three, and perhaps the best handling monitor of anything medium sized and above.
