The Ideal Environment for Your Lizard

colorfulcritters Dec 22, 2005 07:50 PM

I have an iguana and want to know how you lizard keepers keep a moist, humid environment for your pets, if needs be. I have to maintain a tropical climate for my iguana, but I keep it in a large bird cage in order to give it more room, so the environment is too dry and airy. I'm not sure how to duplicate the same climate under such conditions.

I know there's an iguana forum here, but it's lacking.

your right, the ig forum is lacking, in a sense that its pretty dead. first of all, if you spray the cage in the morning and then again a few hours before "lights out" that will raise the humidty quite a bit. also giving your ig a daily bath for about a half hour to an hour will make sure he/she is hydrated. i noticed you said you are using a bird cage. when your iguana gets to be about 3 feet or more you should probably consider building a bigger cage. i know that most bird cages, even large maccaw cages arent big enough for an adult ig. if you custom build a cage you can always make one or more sides solid depending on your needs. just make sure you have enough ventilation. but for now, in the bird cage, you could try hanging bath towels on the sides or back. you will have to change them every few days but that really helps. it is what i had to do when i had my chams in a wire cage and it worked wonders. good luck. happy holidays.
blessed be.

Thanks for your insight, HerpGirl. I'd thought of the bath towel idea but wasn't sure it'd make any effect. I live in Florida, USA, however, and as soon as that ig reaches three feet I'm hoping to put him on our screened in porch. It's about 20 x 30 ft.

Anyways, this little ig is worrying me. He only eats skimpy, never a wide variety, and isn't growing. I've had it for about three months. I'm trying to create the best environment considering my budget and the fact I'd adopted it from someone who'd just plain old knew nothing. I took it on just to save it.

But what do you think about putting plastic around a bird cage? Would this raise the ambient temps? Increase humidity?
