dying for no apparent reason?

SimplyRed Dec 22, 2005 11:59 PM

had one of my females die on me this week. In the middle of moving i left all the snakes at the old place, with the heat at 60 F minimum. she wasnt thin so it wasnt starvation. all the other snakes were in the same place so it wasnt cold (theyre all fine) what could have caused it? slightly moldy bedding? very upset. i like all my snakes

I don't know about your snake...
but I just found my Striped Anery corn on my front porch...
frozen solid.

Apparently he got out and decided to head outside, where it's been in the TEENS. (I live in CT)

I don't know why he headed outside. I have baseboard heat in my apartment, set at 70 at the moment. Warm and dark. Perfect hideout for a snake...

but instead he chose to somehow get from my second floor apartment to the outside...
and died.

Pretend you come from a tropical environment. Then take off all your clothes and stand in 60 degrees for a day....forgetting that you have no way of regulating your temperature. See how you feel.....

Although sixty degrees is cold for a tropical reptile, it's not fatal if the exposure was only for a short period. Was she fed shortly before she was exposed to the temp change? THAT may have caused a problem if she wasn't able to digest her meal properly. Although even this would take a while to cause her death. Just a thought.

no. none of them were fed for some time. i actually hadent been able to get any of the 3 females to feed, but wasnt worried as it had only been a month and they can go longer?

the other 3 snakes were just fine. lively and tongue flicking and everything, and they were all in the same spot. which is why i dont think it was the temperature (even if 60 is "too cold". i just dont know. very sad whatever the reason.
