When to increase feeding

HAUS469 Dec 23, 2005 12:56 AM

How do you tell when to increase feeding. My 05(I was told october hatchling)eats frozen pinkies very fast and very well.Do you just give him 2 to try or just feed him more often?

You did not mention how often you are feeding your snake. It it appears hungry, baby snakes can be fed as often as every other day - although in most cases twice a week is enough. It is better to feed your reptile small, frequent meals than a large meal once a week.

I was told to initially feed him every 5 days.........if you feed them more often, dont you have to handle them less?Since you arent suppose to relly handle them for a while after feeding?

Thanks

Yup thats the catch, you can either feed him every 5 days and only be able to hold him for 2 or 3 odd days or you can feed him once every 7 days and hold him through out the week. I feed my hatchlings every 7 days, but I could feed them every 4-5 days as I hardly get time to hold the little ones when im not busy with my big boy snakes. Also know that your snake wont just hurl his food up if you hold him with some food in his belly just dont shake him up

On an off topic note my ball python had a bulge of mouse in her belly after eating a extra large mouse and I had to handle her to get her back into her cage and she was shook up a bit but is still fine, maybe its just ball pythons though.

You can handle it as often as you like. Especially as you get to know your snake. You can handle the day after feeding or even hours after feeding if you are gentle and watch for any signs of stress. The give them time "rule" is just a precaution it is not a hard fast rule or definite protocol to follow.
If you feed one pinkie every 5 days and the bulge left from that pinkie is barely noticeable move up to two pinkies.
When two pinkies no longer leave a noticeable bulge move up to one fuzzie, then two fuzzies...etc..etc

I have an 05 King, Corn, and Milk. All 3 are now on 2 small/medium pinkies once every 7 (or so) days.

I have two 05 Corns and an 05 MLK. Until recently, they were eating 2-3 large pinkies. I just moved them up to fuzzies. The corns are eating large fuzzies and the MLK is eating 2 small to medium fuzzies. They were eating twice a week during the summer / fall and every 5 days or so now.
