sonoran and tarahumara mountain kings

are these two the same breed or just look the same? was just wondering....thanx warren

Depends on who you talk to. Until 2003, they were both considered to be the same species, lampropeltis pyromelana. There was a paper written in 2003 that suggested that the Tarahumara Mtn. King, l. pyromelana knoblochi, be given status as a full species, lampropeltis knoblochi. I don't know too many people who accept that change. In my opinion, they are the same species, lampropeltis pyromelana, and the Tarahumara Mtn. King is the southern race of that species. In very southern Arizona and northern Sonora it's not hard to find Sonoran Mtn Kings that look almost identical to Tarahumara Mtn. Kings.
