breeder question

hansholland Dec 23, 2005 04:14 AM

hello,
i have 2.2 het albino hognose....
my question, one of my female will be ready to breed in may, she now is 65cm and 245 gram...
she eats very well and i think she will be 300 grams in may,
i will not hibernate her this year can i still breed her or must i wait till 2007???
the breeder from wich i bought my hognoses told me you can not breed them smaller then 300 grams, this is dangerous for egg laying...
so that is why i dont want to hibernate her...
i hope you understand my english

thanks hans
have a nice christmass

I have been breeding western hogs for 20 years now and I have never had a snake become egg bound or any other egg laying problem. If they are big enough and old enough then they can breed, if there not then they just wont! I don't think that snakes in the wild ask to see some ID before breeding to prove shes old enough. I have had females that are only a year old and not very big that just produced a few eggs there first time. I don't think you can force a female snake to breed and if you could and she was to small or to young then she just would not ovulate and not produce eggs. but I do still try to have my females as big as possible. so I say put them together and if shes big enough to ovulate they will breed if she not then they wont.. good luck

I wouldnt, the fertility rate without cooling is very poor.
