Albino sinaloae

Jan Grathwohl Dec 23, 2005 05:45 AM

Hi

I was wondering if any of you guys know of any albinos being made from this subspecies?

I don't reckon to have ever seen one, only abberrant patterned specimens, but no albinos (or melanistic for that matter).

Any of you have pictures of this subspecies as an albino.

There seems to be LOTS of annulata, nelsoni etc as albinos, but why are sinaloae albinos so seldom seen?

There are no pure albino Sinaloans. People have cross bred Sinaloans with Nelson's, which are scientifically recognized as a separate subspecies. Despite this, there are some people who consider Nelson's and Sinaloans the same thing. There are others who opted to take a shortcut when albino Nelson's came out, due the the fact that at the time Nelson's were harder to get than Sinolaons, so they cross bred the two subspecies.

Thanx a lot for the info

That was also my general understanding, that this was the case.

Interesting enought that no one seems to breed true albino sinaloaes.

I agree with Tim's response above. There are no pure amelanistic sinaloans out there. Those that are claimed to be have been crossed with an amelanistic nelson's milk snake at some point.

Although some may dispute this, nelsoni and sinaloae are two different recognized subspecies although they may look similar and come from a simliar region.

They're bound to put up some day as people continue to breed sinaloans in captivity.

Hi Dave

In Northern Europe where i'm situated, sinaloaes are much more common among hobbyist than nelsoni (nelsoni is practically only obtainable as albinos - can't reckon to have ever seen a normal colored nelsoni for sale here in Denmark e.g.)

BUT - you say they are very alike in apperance. Is there a clear way to distinguish normal looking animals of the two species?

I keep a group of 2,5 sinaloas (adults) - or at least they have been sold to me as such - but if they are very alike nelsoni, they might be interesting to double-check.

This link has some excellent information on comparing sinaloans to nelson's. Its from Pete Cragg's old website.
