UVB plus Heat Lamp?

renland Dec 23, 2005 09:56 AM

I was at the petstore recently and saw a combined UVB and heat lamp bulb that I was interested in puchasing. It is slightly expensive ($80), but is supposed to last a year. It is made by TRex. Does anyone here know of it, or use it? Does it sound like a good product? I really want a UVB bulb that can be affixed to a clamp light rather than the tube UVB that I have right now, because it's such a pain to take it off everyday when I open Ozzie's huge cage. I'm hoping that this bulb is the answer. Any feedback is appreciated!

I'm not sure if this was a large chain store or a mom and pop store. While I like to support the small mom and pops that really put a lot of care into the animals they sell $80 for that bulb is extremely overpriced. You can get the same for around $45-$50 shipped to your door from some of the places online such as www.reptiledirect.com, or www.bigappleherp.com.

I have used these bulbs since they started making them for reptiles a few years back. Not many of the self ballasted bulbs last longer then 4-6 months, but they do carry a warrentee for up to a year, and will produce uvb for up to a year or longer if they do last.. May I suggest purchasing the Mega Ray brand if your going to be purchasing these types of bulbs. Not only do they produce the highest uvb, they also have been thoroughly tested, and improved upon over the years. These have lasted the longest for me. I have 5-6 bulbs going on the 6 month of use.. I know if I bought the zoomed powersun or trex brand atleast 1 or 2 would have failed by now. The mega ray come in two styles a self ballast which will produce heat and can screw into a fixture or an external ballast bulb which is more expensive because you must purchase the ballast, but they last much longer cause they don;t produce the high heat the sb do. I heard of the eb bulbs lasting as long as 2 years and still providing good uvb levels. You can read up on, and purchase the mega rays at www.reptileuv.vom

I was wondering if $80 was too steep. I will look into the MegaRays. Thanks!

I paid $80 CANADIAN for mine. Keep the store receipt, box and instructions should you need to exchange it.

Sounds like a mercury vapour bulb. These should last a year if they are mounted securely in a completely vertical position, setting the bulb at an angle will cause it to burn out much faster. $80 does sound rather high for a MVB even in Canadian funds. There are alot of mail order reptile stores in the states that sell the MVB's for much cheaper, even with shipping ontop.

$80 CANADIAN seems the normal up here. Shipping accros the border is iffy. I was landed with a $35 customs charge on a $75 camera lens for some reason.

This is what I use, in the 100W moddel for my chameleons.
