feeding question

bytheshore1 Dec 23, 2005 07:50 PM

I just got a 7 ft female albino burmese from a kid in town that could no longer take care of it. His parents said she had to go. Thank God he did not just turn her loose. He had been feeding her smaller rats and said she was close to 3 years old. 7ft seems small for 3 yr old female burmese. What do you think? Also, I have heard some people feeding these big snakes store bought chickens. Is this safe? Should I boil it or what? The snake seems healthy and is very tame and likes to be handled alot and not skinny at all. I have had big boas but sometimes it can be a problem finding the right size food when they are large. And this girl will get bigger than any boa I have raised. Eventually moving on to rabbits or hopefully whole chickens. That I could always pick up at the grocery store. Thanks you in advance for any help.

I've got a seven footer that seems to do real well on jumbo rats for the time being LOL. He'll eat a rat every week or two. Although I feed live so far, there are places you can order frozen feeders at a fair price. Look under rodent/feeders on the front page. In leiu of that you can try and raise your own. Good luck with your new live in

Thanks. I do have a local rat breeder that normally is a great supplier. But this past summer was selling all his weined rats and pups to mostly ball python breeders. 50,000 to 3 different customers a week!! So his supply of adults dropped except for his breeders. I do plan on buying a bunch of his exbreeders for the freezer when available. I just finished boiling 3 large chicken legs, nice fat ones, and scented them with a rat. She did not attack like she does even a thawed or fresh killed rat. I offered 1 at a time and just laid it on the floor. After a few minutes she took the first one. The other 2 I had to cover the cage up as she is easily distracted. After 15 minutes they were gone and she is curled up on the heat pad. I just wonder if this is adequate food for proper growth and health. I have many balls, boas, and colubrids but she is quickly becoming one of my favorites. What a personality when I have her out. Like an overgrown cornsnake crawling all over me. Anyway, any info on the chicken dinner would help and also the size issue. Thanks, Tim

Keep in mind raw chicken is an excellent vector for salmonella.
You'd be better off finding some large rats.
With all the snakes you have, you should have nno problems making out a large order...which would justify the shipping cost.
I was feeding 7ft burms small 1-1.5 lb rabbits.
Now I feed the super large collosal rats.
Too many picky eaters to be ordering a little of everything.
