does anyone have experience with the Mauritius farm-raised aldabras advertized by aldabras.com - the price is the lowest around, but I am always suspicious of animals that have to be imported on consignment.

My own personal thoughts on this was.........With all the ones available here in the U.S. for almost the exact prices, why buy something that's not even here?

barry - I would agree, but they offer babies at $1500 (plus $85 shipping), which is several hundred $$ less than domestic breeders.

I believe the animals she offers at that price are true babies meaning that they are right out of the egg where you have the highest risk.

Her animals that are comparable in size to animals offered here in the US are comparable in price.

It all depends on the post care you are looking for and the risk you are willing to take.

I keep in touch with everyone I've sold an Aldabra to as long as they want to. I send out updates on litterature and care tips as the years go on because I'm learning at these animals also.

Or are they all imported?

EJ Dec 24, 2005 12:23 PM

I know Bob Clark has been selling locally captive produced babies for a few years now from a female he raised from hatchling. I don't know if he had any this year.

He was retailing them at $2500 out of the egg.

Is Bob the only one? I hadn't heard of anyone breeding them before. At least not in saleable numbers.

He's the only one I know of... that's not saying much.

I sell Aldabras from Mauritius. Most of the Aldabras in the pet trade come from Mauritius.

Aldabras.com is based in the Seychells and the person in charged seems to be a trustworthy person. She has a relative in the US that is brokering the animals in the US. All the people that I've talked to that have delt with her have been happy but there is a time lag and worry factor.

She wants the money up front and the animals are usually not in the US at the time of purchase.

Ed,

Any word on how the few Aldabras left in the Seychelles did in the Tsunami? When I was there, they were all in low lying areas of the islands and all captive.

Believe it or not the Seychells were not impacted all that bad.
