oklahoma alligators

pfraley Dec 24, 2005 12:11 AM

I would greatly appreciate any information regarding the best place to observe alligators in oklahoma. I saw one at forked lake (mccurtain county, eagletown) several years ago but have yet to see another. I go to red slough and little river wildlife refuge a few times a year. Anybody know of any other places? I read an article not too long ago in which a game warden mentioned fobb bottoms (near ardmore). Any input would be much appreciated.

Most of the ones I've been able to see have been on private property (with permission, of course). The best public place is probably Red Slough WMA--that is where the Wildlife Department releases "nuisance" animals (the ones they don't shoot, anyway). There are also a lot on the Little River NWR, but it helps to talk to some of the locals to get an idea of specifically where to look. You are not likely to see anything in the daytime, but at night with a spotlight you can find them.

Thanks. I saw one in forked lake which is the the little river wildlife refuge, been to red slough a few times. Have you heard of Fobb Bottoms, close to ardmore, i read an interview with game warden who said that he had seen slides that looked like were made by 13 or 14 foot alligator.

Where are all of these places? I'm going to visit the in-laws in northern texas, and then olklahoma and would LOVE to see an alligator! I'm not exactly sure where I"ll be going, but Okl. city is the likely spot. I'm not even sure how long it takes to drive across this state.
