New jackson

bigmansm Dec 24, 2005 08:21 PM

Well i adpoted one of VegasBilly's babies. I have had the little guy for 4 days now.
He seems to be doign pretty good, but i have several questions:

What is the proper temperature range for a jackson Chameleon? What's a good humidity range?
What is the body temperature of the baby jackson suppose to be?

I know the jacksons cage temp shouldnt be above 78degrees F but the little guys loves the warm heat bulb, should i leav it on as long as the cage temp doesnt pass this range?

I threw a bunch of flyless fruit flys in the cage and he has barely eaten them. Many of the flys are just chilling on the ground of the cage walking around, and several are just sitting on the top screen of the cage. It doesn't even seem like the baby jackson even noticed them. I the fly the flys on the top are acessable to him and i am pretty sure he could go to the bottom of the cage if he wanted to.
What should i do to make sure he eats them?

heres a few of the quesitons now, more to come later

I can't answer your other questions, but I had a baby jacksonii and it died from a heat bulb. Don't use one, even if he likes it.

I had him in a glass cage though, and having yours in a screen cage will allow the heat to escape, but just so you know, heat isn't as good for them as it is for some other species.

Hello, baby jacksons need a higher humidity from 70% and up temps in the 70s. use a 15-20watt basking bulb. high temps can kill them. mist 3 times a day but niot directly on him. Hope this helps. does vegasbilly have any more babies. take care Matt

I covered him UP w/care advice HAH! Funny thing....the little bugger is now eating like a chow-hound. Sometimes I forget our tendencies to worry endlessly and micromanage new arrivals, especially one so tiny and helpless looking.

I basically told him how I've kept them since birth - low-mid 70s, mist minimum of twice daily, no extra heat but a UVB bulb across the top, and 45 minutes of sun if ambients are 65F-70F and shade opportunities in the cage. He made the trip to SoCal (yes, I do deliver to some places) and he has a very nice habitat set-up! I told him it might take a day to acclimate as Jacksons are sensitive to changes in their environment - from his recent e-mails it sounds like he's settling in nicely.

Hey BIll
thanks for the reply. The little guys seems to be doing quite well. Im still very paranoid but i think thats best to ensure survival.

Temps are good humidity may be a little low but there are also good times throughout the day that humidty is fine.

Hes getting some colors but not as obviously as some of the pictures you posted. I hope we are correct on his gender???
