a younger male with larger female...?

paine Dec 24, 2005 11:52 PM

We just got a new male to go with our female and I am wondering when it is safe to put them together. The female is a few inches longer then him and he is a few months younger. Will the female be bothered by him? They will soon both be in a 55g and have all kinds of hides and stuff in there. They have been left together for a small amout of time so far just to see reactions and so far so good. He is a really good looking guy SHTC. thanks.

1. Your new male should be quarantined from the female for at least 60-90 days. Take a fecal to the vet and test for parasite. They can show up later, so do it again before you even decide to add him in with the female.

2. One male and one female is never a good ratio. The female with get stressed out due to the males advances They are little horn dogs. I would place a male with no less than three females so the sexual aggression is not focused on only one female.

3. It is always best to house leopard geckos individually.

4. If you do decide to introduce them there is no guarantee they will get along what so ever. Even females will sometimes not get along with each other. The best time to judge is during feeding times. I'm sure by now you know not to house two males together they will fight to the death.

Females should be at least 50 grams and a year old, and in good health, before being aloud to breed. She will be able to handle the egg laying better and gain her weight back faster. A male should be around the same age and in good health to poduce healthy offspring.

With that said, please think twice before you decided to introduce them in the same inclosure.
