b23ball23 Dec 25, 2005 05:27 AM

I have a new 55 gallon tank that I want to put a bigger type snake in it. I already have a corn snake and milk snake, but bothe of those are too small. I want something that when fully grown will be happy in a 55 gal tank, and bigger than a milk/ corn snake

i was thinking some sort of boa??

i want to spend a maximum of 100$ for the snake

please help me out with some suggestions!!!!

GOD BLESS!!!!

Well, an adult sized ball python would do very well in a 55 gallon. You can pick one up a regular one from a pet store for around 60 bucks, or at a show for maybe 30-40. Now if you've got ooohhh about 200,000 dollars, you could pick yourself up a Leucistic ball python, do a google search for them, they're beautiful!!!

Oh, I wouldn't buy one from a pet store. Often times they are imported, not eating well, and haven't be well cared for. Try and find a breeder. Also, consider a carpet python or an Irian Jaya (actually a small form of carpet python). Personally, I prefer the look of a carpet or Irian Jaya to balls.

Most pet stores that specialize in herps have breeders that they deal with on a regular basis. Trust me when I say pet store I'm not talking about the megala-don't give a crap about our animals only sales stores hhhgghmmm-Petco-hmmgmm. Find a mom and pop place that breeds on site in the back. Or if you live in bum-F-u-c-k eygpt then contact a breeder directly. Carpets will get up to 7 feet long in some cases, 55 gallons might not be enough stretching room. Matter of prefference I would guess.

Gotta find a good mom and pop place. I live in Austin , TX. and don't know any around here I'd care to purchase from. Check them out well. Local herp groups can help in that regard. Of course, you'd want to check out any breeder you purchase from as well.

Ya, you're probably right about carpets in a 55 gal., though I would expect an Irian Jaya, esp a male, would do OK. I'm just not a fan of balls. Not fond of the fat sausage look.

Also another reason why I said a ball python would be a good idea is because the guy does not want to spend more than 100 bucks on the snake. I'm not sure how much carpets go for in TX but in Cali, they're going for 200-350 depending on who you talk to.

Umm, ok, I'm not that familar with carpets, or that particular snake either, but just like some people preffer chevy over ford or what not, so any ways, Merry Christmas!!

I have a 50 gallon tall tank for my Irian Jaya carpet python. The snake is still a baby and in a 10 gallon tank, but carpet pythons are good for a mostly/semi aboreal snake without the costs of a GTP.

Check the kingsnake.com classified, but you probably won't find a lot available this time of year.

I've purchased from Michael at
http://pythoninapeartree.com/_wsn/page3.html and it looks like he has one 05 available for $125

Also a quick websearch shows one at
http://www.lowergroundreptiles.net/available/availpythons.html, but I con't know anything about this breeder.

If there is a local herp group in your area, they may be able to point you a local breeder. Not only would that avoid the shipping cost which can easily add 30% - 50% to your cost, but it's always nice to meet the breeder, see the snake before you purchase it, etc.

Forgot to mention that West Papaun is the new name for Iran Jaya. Look for both names.

And males will tend to be smaller and may even cost less.
