Large boa racks or large collection cages...

tsusnakeguy Dec 25, 2005 05:31 PM

I am wanting to see what people with large collections of boas use to keep them in. I am building cages for mine right now but I am wanting to see if there is another way to house them when I have a collection of 10 or more boas that are 5 or 6 foot long. So please just post any pictures of your collection and there homes. I was really wanting to see what type of racks there are for boas, I have seen smaller ones for corns but not many for boas.
Thanks

That has to get expensive after a while. But very nice set up.

relatively speaking the boaphiles are relatively inexpensive. I've built my own cages and to make a stack of four 2' x 4' x 19" tall dividable cages cost me well over a grand (probably closer to $2000 but don't tell my wife ) in materials alone. The cages were done very nicely with oak wood, oak plywood, fully lined with formica inside, heat tape etc. etc. I really like my cages as breeding cages for my BRB's but they do take up a 5' x 2' floor space for 8 cage sections. I also have two stacks of boaphiles 4' x2' x 11.5" 6 single, 3 dividable into 2 sections and 3 dividable into 4 sections. From a cost standpoint they are less expensive than the materials I would buy to build a wood/glass cage and that does not include my time to build. For a "showcase" I prefer my homebuilt. For utility, cost per cage and ease of expanding and/or reconfiguring my snake room, the boaphiles are MUCH better.

Here is a few pics of my older homebuilt. Very similar look to my newer one but the newer one has some improvements. Like all formica inside, not just floors, heat tape, individual levels etc. etc.

wow thats a lot of money for home built. I am building 2 cages right now 5 long, 2 deep, and 18 inches high. They are maybe costing me 100 each. They are built out of nice Birch plywood.

Yeah, I didn't exactly scrimp anywhere.

Some quick estimates of the per cage expenses:

$50 - 1 sheet oak plywood
$50 - 1 sheet formica
$100 - 30 board feet of solid oak
$5 - contact cement
$15 - piano hinge
$15 - glass
$25 - heat tape
$30 - fluorescent fixtures
quick estimate total - $290 / level

plus probably another $25 - $50 for incidentals like locks screws stain finish etc.

And another $150 or so for the PVC piping I added on the sides

Grand total - $1410 to $1510

I know not cheap and could be made less expensive but these cages will last. All inside surfaces are covered in formica and all seams sealed. All the sides and backs are 3/4 inch plywood all dado and rabbited together. The doors all lock, have glass windows and are cope and stick construction. The face frames have alignment holes along with slots in the sides so the stack can't shift. The entires cage can be set up as 8 individual sectionms or the PVC pipes can be opened to allow travel between all the cage sections. Typically for breeding season I set the cage up as two vertical stacks of 4 cage section seach. In each 4 cage section is colony of 1.3 or 1.4 adult BRB's.
