A BRB Gal Wants To Know......

Sunshine Dec 25, 2005 07:28 PM

....if anyone here has had experience with a Dumeril? I have liked their looks and am considering a trade locally for an adult feeding CB male bred twice with no viable offspring for a not so nice proven female adult BRB. Are they really as problematic as they appear to be in regards to feeding? Or is it like in Brazilian Rainbows mostly about husbandry and presentation?

Linda,
...I like Dumerils Boas. I had a trio of them. The male bred with the largest female and two years in a row she produced slugs. I sold them to make more room for my Surinams. My largest female Dum was a big snake. The last time I saw her which was a couple years after I sold her she was around 8 feet and very stout. I never had any trouble getting any of mine to eat. If I was you I would get a baby Dum because they are so cheap and you get the joy of watching it grow and later the pride in owning an animal you personally raised from a baby. Some baby Dums like fuzzy rats much more than any mouse. Many years ago when Dumerils Boas were very rare in collections and VERY expensive the word on them was to be careful as they are occasionally cannibalistic. You do not hear that about them recently but I would be careful if housing two that are not the same size together.

I also have had many Dumerils, never had any luck reproducing them, and eventually sold them to persue other projects, I agree I would get a baby and have the fun of watching it grow, and keep your Proven Rainbow, and produce more beautiful rainbows with her. If you want a Dumerils as a pet I would get one as a baby, wich sounds like what you are wanting since the once your talking about would not make a good breeder. There are many good breeders of Dumerils, they are a great pet, I loved all of mine. Good luck...and have a happy new year...
